Rising gun crime in gun control capitol of the world
Submitted by cbaus on Tue, 11/11/2008 - 00:10.By Gerard Valentino
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that The People’s Republic of China is seeing an increase gun crime despite some of the strictest gun laws in the world.
From the story:
China's weapons laws are among the world's toughest. Its blanket ban on private ownership of rifles, pistols and even gun replicas is a core tenet of social policy. Still, a gun culture is taking hold.
China may be freer from gun crime than many nations, and official statistics show overall crime on a continuous down trend. Yet, these days, reports about gun crimes turn up as often as several times a week even in the tightly controlled state-run media. The reports are often brief, without much follow-up as cases progress.
As pro-gun advocates in America have pointed out for years, criminals will always find a way to get a gun and as anyone using basic logic knows, strict gun control only serves to disarm honest people.
The simple straightforward answer is – none. There is no chance an outright gun ban would be successful in America.
Why Do We "Keep and Bear Arms"? Part 2
Submitted by cchumita on Tue, 11/11/2008 - 00:05.By Larry Elder
Did it work -- the Washington, D.C., gun ban, that is?
The Supreme Court, in a 5-4 decision, struck down the ban, holding that a) the Second Amendment gives individuals the right to keep and bear arms, and b) while the government may regulate the boundaries of the Second Amendment, the DC ban goes too far.
The New York Times, in an editorial condemning the Supreme Court case, says: "Thirty-thousand Americans are killed by guns every year -- on the job, walking to school, at the shopping mall. The Supreme Court on Thursday all but ensured that even more Americans will die senselessly."
Really?

Seven violent attacks in seven days at The Ohio State University campus
Submitted by cbaus on Mon, 11/10/2008 - 00:05.By Mark Noble
Often when the issue of safety on campus arises – typically due to news of a violent attack on or near campus like this one, the media and educators assert that they are shocked because “campus is supposed to be a safe haven” from violence. Organizations like The Brady Campaign capitalize on such nonsense with absurd campaigns like “The Pledge”.
Over at “Of Arms and the Law”, they make a good point that:
a person who is not deterred by the thought of life in prison is not likely to be deterred by the thought of breaking a promise
The problem is that violent individuals could care less about the wishes of civilized educated people to be left alone – it’s like lions hunting at watering holes on the African savannah – the criminals go where the soft targets are.
Politico: It was guns, not race, that affected Bradley
Submitted by cbaus on Thu, 11/06/2008 - 00:10.In the run-up to election day, mainstream media pundit and mainstream media fretted about various theories about how the election could be stolen from Barack Obama. One of the most common fears was a related to a lurking racism that was not showing up in the polls.
But The Politico's Joe Mathews did his homework, and posted his findings Tuesday morning.
Turns out it wasn't racism that turned voters off to Tom Bradley's 1982 campaign for California governor...it was guns.

Op-ed: Gun Control - Common Sense or Common Cause?
Submitted by cchumita on Thu, 10/30/2008 - 23:05.By Howard Nemerov
Sen. Barack Obama said recently he is “a strong supporter of the Second Amendment” and will not try take Americans’ guns away if elected.
“I believe it’s an individual right,” he said in an interview following a speech at [University of Nevada, Reno]. “Lawful gun owners have nothing to fear from an Obama Administration.”
But, Obama said, he is for “some common sense gun safety laws.” He said that means keeping weapons out of the hands of criminals, the mentally ill and children.
“And we need a system that makes sure we can trace guns back to the original owners and dealers.”[1]
What Obama isn’t saying is that in order to “trace guns to the original owners” we must enact national gun owner licensing and registration for each gun purchased. Such policies have both historical and future significance.

Ender’s Shadow Looms Over U.S. Media
Submitted by cbaus on Wed, 10/22/2008 - 23:10.By Ken Hanson, Esq.
Orson Scott Card has an excellent essay on the sorry state of U.S. Media posted at Greesnboro, N.C.'s RhinoTimes, entitled "Would the Last Honest Reporter Please Turn On the Lights?"
It is an excellent examination of what the media is telling (and not telling) the public this election cycle. He takes it a step forward in a follow-up essay looking at the current history of constitutional usurpations and the possible need for constitutional conventions in 2010.
For those of you wondering, yes, this is the same Orson Scott Card who wrote Ender’s Game and its' progeny. Even if you are not a science fiction fan, you owe it to yourself to read Ender’s Game. For many young adults, it is a transformative work. I was thrilled to find that he is blogging/writing somewhat regularly in Greensboro, N.C.. (He is one of my favorite authors, though I admit you will either like his books or hate them, and I’ve swung between the extremes depending upon the work. There is such a thing as too cerebral.) The fact that he is turning his futurist, imaginative eye toward modern politics and issues of liberty makes for some exciting reading.
